Sport has deep roots in the United States: from our "national pastime" and Olympic gold-medallists to the community-building of kid's programs, sport plays a huge role in our culture and, increasingly, in our college and university programs. Sport sciences and physical education is an area of postsecondary study that's growing fast, and private colleges and universities are right there keeping pace. Private institutions have been at the forefront of higher education in America since 1636 when Harvard--the nation's first private institution--was founded. Today there are about 1,600 private colleges and universities in the US, including major research universities, church- and faith-affiliated institutions, historically black colleges and universities, women's colleges, two-year colleges. and everything from small schools with under 100 students to large universities with over 30,000.
